"Ok, your total comes to $1278.53", said the cashier brightly. Alyssa pulled out her gold credit card with a flourish.

Alyssa Rhodes was with two of her "friends" who attended the same private academy that she did. They had been spending the weekend shopping, in preparation for the new school year, which was to start in two more weeks. They had already been in several shops today, including a jewelry store, an electronics store, and a fancy clothing store. They had spent part of the morning getting their hair and nails done.

This is the newly completed Elante Enterprises Corporate Headquarters. The building is almost completely automated (think the Clamp Center from Gremlins 2 but without all the bugs and the, y'know, gremlins :)). The building cost nearly $5.5 BILLION and 15 years to complete. The Chairwoman of Elante Enterprises is Arianna Elante, Lyra's mother. The building is located in New York City (not really, just pretend it does). The building contains around 90,000 employees, as well as a large cafeteria for employees and a day care center for the children of employees. Some of the perks are great medical benefits, paid vacations, and yearly bonuses, as well as free coffee. The lowest wage of ANYONE working for Elante Enterprises is $13 an hour (and that's how much the lowest-ranked JANITORS make and even the janitors get all the same benefits as the rest of the workers).


Corporate motto: "An Elante is never second-best, whether it's people, goods, or services".
